Abstract

THIS ARTICLE EXAMINES DEFINITIONS OF THE CONCEPT OF "CLIENTELISM" SEEKING FOR A UNIVERSAL DEFINITION. THE AUTHOR BEGINS BY CONSIDERING DIFFERENT SUB-TYPES OF CLIENTELISM THAT EXPLAIN THEIR CAPACITY TO ADAPT TO CHANGING CIRCUMSTANCES. SHE THEN EXTENDS THE CONCEPT TO CLIENTELAR POLITICAL PARTIES, THEIR FORMS OF ORGANIZATION AND THEIR STRATEGIES FOR WINNING ELECTIONS.
