From #SimulacroCDMX to #MéxicoNosNecesita: 19S in Twitter

Abstract

To explore the role of Twitter during the September 19th, 2017 earthquake, Mexico’s Trending Topic was reviewed over a week, as a result of which 139 hashtags related to the tragedy and its consequences were obtained and analyzed. Results show how the population found this socialdigital network to be a valuable tool for solidarity and spontaneous organization, the creation of collaborative networks (capable of addressing the surge of fake news that flooded the networks), the expression of collective identity, and the visibilization of the latent social anger towards injustice and corruption.
