Resumen

En el presente artículo se analiza el desarrollo de la industria petrolera latinoamericana. Está compuesto por dos secciones: en la primera se enfoca el papel desempeñado por las empresas multinacionales en el desarrollo de dicha industria. La industria del petróleo en América Latina estuvo desde el principio en manos de multinacionales británicas y estadunidenses. Las relaciones entre éstas y los gobiernos de la región fue en general conflictiva. Para la década de 1970, esta industria ya había sido nacionalizada; sin embargo, ello no implicó mayores pérdidas para las multinacionales, ya que éstas controlaban la tecnología y el mercado y mantuvieron una presencia en el proceso productivo mediante su participación en joint-ventures con los Estados. En la segunda sección se analiza el proceso de apertura de la industria petrolera latinoamericana durante los años ochenta y noventa como resultado de la crisis económica y del proceso de globalización de la economía mundial.
